How do I find a new sponsor if I am laid off?

Locating a new employer differs based upon your employment situation. Apprentices working in the open shop environment are responsible for locating a new employer using traditional job search strategies. Apprentices must contact the ITA so that the proper records are brought up to date once a new employer has been located. Apprentices working in a closed shop environment should familiarize themselves with their ‘joint boards’ policy in this event.

How do I sign up to become a registered apprentice?

Once you have located a sponsor employer in a chosen trade, you and the sponsor will need to register with the Industry Training Authority (ITA).  Forms and information regarding this can be found at http://www.itabc.ca.  Employers must have an ITA Organization ID number prior to registering apprentices.

Can I work in BC while waiting to challenge certification?

Yes, but you must be legally eligible to work in Canada and must meet any licensing requirements for your trade.

Where can I get upgrade/refresher training?

Opportunities for upgrade training vary by training institution. It is recommended that you contact your local training provider for up to date training schedules. Upgrade training may also be available through employer groups, associations or union organizations. It is also recommended that you ask your employer regarding upgrading options.

What can I do if I cannot get my previous employer to complete the employer declaration included in the C of Q/IP Challenge Application package?

A statutory declaration form is included in each challenge package and must be completed for each place of employment where you are unable to obtain an employer declaration. Statutory declarations must be completed before and signed by a Commissioner for Oaths, a Notary Public, or a Lawyer.

How do I challenge a C of Q/IP exam?

Application packages including forms and the challenge process can be found at http://www.itabc.ca/Page496.aspx by ‘clicking’ on your chosen trade and following the links.  Challenge requirements generally require proof of 1 ½ times the practical hours required for apprenticeship and include the successful completion of either a Tradesperson Qualification or Interprovincial Red Seal exam.
